I have tested around with these the past 30 minutes and I think I figured most of it out.
 
Where to buy a gift-
Under Emporium Specials is where you will find the current present(s) on sale.
 
Red Surprise Present: 500 credits
 

 
 
How to set a greeting-
Each present takes up 1 space in your inventory almost like a teleporter and a magic pin. Choose a present and place it in your guest room. Double click the present.
 
Now there will be four different layout options:[list=1]

• Donald Card
• Mickey Card
• Holiday Card 1
• Holiday Card 2

 
Now choose click on one of the bullets on the bottom. Once the bullet is highlighted (next to the one you want) it should show up as that layout background.
 
Take your cursor and highlight the word "Gift" and press backspace to delete it. Now add your own titile.
 

 
Take your cursor and highlight the words "Gift text" and press backspace to delete it.
 

 
Now you are free to type in your own greeting. Once you have your greeting and title typed in press OK.
 
REMINDER: You cannot go back and edit the present at all!
 

 
What happens after I set the layout?-
You are now free to trade it, place it in someones room, put it as a quest prize, etc.
 
How do I know who it is from?-
If you read the top of the message it will show who it is from and what date they typed it on.
 

 
How do I know the difference from each present in my inventory?-
If you double click the present directly in your inventory the greeting should come up.
 

 
Now you know what the greeting is when you place it in someone's guest room.
 
How do I know the greeting when I am in a trade?-
Click once on a present in your trade window. A new button will appear under the info about the item on the right side of the trade window.
 

 
You can press the button to see the greeting before you trade it to another VMK player.
 
What happens when I place it in someone else's room?-
If you place it in someone else's Guest Room it becomes theirs. You need to know which present you are placing (double click it to see the message before placing). Once it is placed in the other players guest room you can no longer have control of the item. You cannot pick it up, move it, or rotate it. If you place it down in the wrong room you might be lucky enough to ask the person for it back. They can then trade you it back.

A friend did this to me when she accidentally gave me the wrong present.  I gave it back to her through trade.  I also had a friend that didn't know what to do with it so she just bought it and gave it to me with nothing written on it at all.  I think people will get the hang of it, but by then it might be after Christmas/Holidays.

I really love the presents, but I think they should of did it a little earlier.  Yes, I know, they wanted to show them off in the ride a thon first, but still, I think it would of given people more time so they could be concentrating on building their gingerbread houses and not running out and getting presents for people.

On mine I tried to write continuously and it won't let me continue when I got all the way on the right hand side so I had to hit enter everytime I got close to the right hand side so I could keep writing on the next line.

Grr! i got a present and it wouldn't let me write past the first line! I pressed enter, closed it and opened it again, erased the message, pressed all the arrow keys (one at a time ) and did just about everything else. So, I ended up with something short and boring..  For 500 credits, i would have expected more

When it happened to me I took the last word off that sentence and hit enter.  Then wrote that word on the next line so it won't go all the way to the end.
